Description
This book aims to show musicians with a "classical" education a way to familiarize themselves with the sounds of jazz. The harmony of jazz is therefore examined from the perspective of traditional music theory. Many regularities of jazz harmony can be well understood against the background of traditional concepts (figured bass, roman numeral analysis, theory of functions, counterpoint), because jazz recapitulated the development of European classical tonal language from the 19th century to the avant-garde in fast motion.
The author teaches techniques of traditional composition, form theory, analysis, ear training and score reading at the University of Music Saarbrücken, Germany.
