Description
Euroscepticism in the the European Union’s (EU) core, neo-fascism at its periphery, fiercely determined separatism in some regions – how do these phenomena go together, and what consequences bears their spread for the EU?
We claim that the different phenomena have in common their discursive foundation in two arguments: A self-other argument, defending culturally defined identities. It is joined by an economic argument against redistribution, aiming to secure the wealth of a community. The respective combination of the two arguments leads to different political projects for Europe, each coming with a particular institutional setup. They feed back on the European level and influence the integration process.
The volume contains case studies on Catalunya and Northern Italy, on Franco-German politics during crisis and conceptions of Europe amongst German citizens, as well as on consequences of these developments for the EU integration process.

Reviews
