Description
The Salonican historian Joseph Nehama (1881–1971) was director of the reform-oriented francophone schools of the Alliance Israélite Universelle in Salonika, community activist, banker, journalist, and author. Nehama was deeply attached to his hometown and returned there as a survivor of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. With his seven-volume “Histoire des Israélites de Salonique”, he created a comprehensive historiography of his city from antiquity to the Second World War. This translation of selected chapters from the 16th century is intended to acquaint today’s readers with the forgotten voice of Joseph Nehama and to facilitate access to it with a detailed introduction.
