Should such interventions be permitted in liberal democracies? And how can such debates be conducted in societies with pluralistic worldviews? Proponents of so-called ‘liberal eugenics’ argue, following John Rawls' political liberalism, for the permissibility of prenatal interventions in the genetic makeup. The study takes a critical look at ‘liberal eugenics’ and reconstructs the contours of a complex concept of liberty that fleshes out the physical and social dimensions of liberty and can inform the public debate on germline interventions.
