Description
The term infrastructure is a young one (19th century), and is associated with cross-epochal exchange. Following the controversy in German historical science, the study, which is based on a regional historical perspective for the period from the late Middle Ages to the First World War, asks whether, for example, market squares, mills or town halls are infrastructure in today's sense, as well as the significance of continuity and regional components. Two small towns, Seßlach (Upper Franconia) and Kleve (Rhine-Meuse area), serve as the study sites. The findings of other disciplines are also integrated, and Luhmann's social and media theory enables a deconstruction of social structures across epochs.
