The author asks whether AI can help to reconcile the protection of the core area of privacy with the interest in effective criminal investigation through secret investigative methods: It is possible that an AI can independently detect and eliminate core content before the results reach the investigators. This is analysed on the basis of four covert investigation methods: acoustic surveillance of living spaces, online searches, telecommunications surveillance and acoustic surveillance outside living spaces. The analysis shows that AI can protect the core area and increase the efficiency of investigations. However, adjustments to the criminal procedure code are necessary.
