Klare Worte

Through his commitment to modern armed forces, Bernhard Gertz shaped the Bundeswehr as few others have. The expansion of participation rights, the opening of all career paths to women and the establishment of operational welfare provision are inseparably linked with the long-serving Federal Chair of the German Armed Forces Association (DBwV). Even after leaving active service, his dedication to members of the Bundeswehr did not cease; it continued through his work with the German Hardship Foundation. Some of the traces left by Gertz – the soldier, lawyer and advocate – are recorded in this edited volume by his companions along the way. The contributions offer valuable impulses for the ongoing debate on how to ensure a future-ready Bundeswehr and how best to shape the current turning point.
