What traces does colportage leave behind in literary modernism? This book examines narrative strate-gies, material formats and reception routines used in popular literature from 1850 to 1936 and illuminates the interconnections between colportage and literary 'high culture'. That there are closer relationships than schematic high/low distinctions suggest becomes apparent, for example, when Vicki Baum characterises 'Menschen im Hotel' as a 'Kolportageroman mit Hintergründen', Joseph Roth portrays a 'Kolporteur' for the magazine 'Kokain' or the narrator of Irmgard Keun's 'Das kunstseidene Mädchen' claims: 'I am a detective novel'.
