Description
In constitutional and social law, education and health policy, political ethics, animal ethics and in many other contexts, minimum standards are often invoked. The discussion on minimal social security benefits and their relationship to the principle of human dignity may serve as a prominent example. At the same time, the precise limits drawn by the respective minimum standards that are proposed in specific contexts often remain vague or controversial. Sometimes the general idea of distinguishing between higher-ranking minimum standards and subordinate ‘ordinary’ standards as such is challenged. However, general and comparative reflections on the role of minimum standards are comparatively rare. The contributions in this volume are a step in this direction. From an ethical and a legal perspective, they try to illuminate the role, the benefits and problems of normative minimum standards both systematically and by discussing specific examples.
