Description
Is competition the sole driving force behind scientific progress and technological innovation? This volume illustrates that scientific actors are always involved in cooperative structures; the two modes of action are not mutually exclusive. The contributions examine the resulting tensions using examples from Europe and the US since the 1970s. It is explored how and why actors cooperated despite competition, how they competed in cooperative arrangements, and how political and economic interests shaped this interplay. Cooperative and competitive relationships come in various forms and are subject to historical change; they are often unstable but always interrelated, and they have a strong influence on scientific research and its results.
