After intense debate, cultural history has now established itself as the dominant paradigm of historical research. But what is cultural history anyway? There is a consensus that it is not defined by a subject area, but by its approaches, its perspectives on the past. This book introduces the emergence of cultural history, addresses points of contention and presents working methods and theories. It endeavours to summarise what has been achieved, but also aims to point out future perspectives and new challenges. Its aim is to provide students and teachers of history and cultural studies with an overview of a broad and ever-changing field of research.
