Description
The Kulturkampf, the conflict between the German Reich and the Catholic Church in the 1870s and 1880s, was an epochal event. It had a lasting impact on the relationship between the denominations and the relationship between the state and religion in Germany and marked a fundamental crisis of modernisation, if not a deep-seated problem of secular liberalism in dealing with religious and cultural differences. The contributions in this book discuss the constellations of conflict in the historical Kulturkampf and its broad impact on public discourse. At the same time, they reflect on the forms and logic of cultural escalation that are still associated with 'culture wars' nowadays.
