For the first time the thesis explores the operation of the »Bonner Spruchkollegium« in the 19th century. While various of the »Spruchkollegien« have already been the subject of legal historical research, this special part of the faculty's history so far remained unheeded. Using newly discovered archival records a comprehensive portrayal of the »Bonner Spruchkollegium«, ranging from its basic functional and organizational principles to the lively, sometimes even scandalous day-to-day work, is now presented.
For more than three-quarters of a century, legal scholars in Bonn have formed this particular institution performing a judgelike function by delivering verdicts for German courts. Given the approaching bicentennial of the university, to whose founding the origins of the »Spruchkollegium« date back, this work is recommended not only to the scientific public but also to those interested in the history of the University of Bonn.
