Horizontal interoperability is widely regarded as an effective instrument against lovk- in effects in the market for messaging services. Yet its competitive effects are ambivalent. This book analyses the economic foundations of network effects, multi-homing behaviour and ecosystem dynamics in the context if messaging services. It examines ti what extent interoperability obligations under the DMA, Telecommunications Law and German Competition Law are suited to achieving the goal of enhanced contestability. In doing so, it also shedd light in key countervailing factors such as homogenization, weakened innovation inventives and the ecosystem advantages of established providers.
