Description
After the end of the Cold War a main concern in the West is the world-wide spread of military technologies and the proliferation of nuclear weapons and delivery systems. Missiles equipped with weapons of mass destruction play an important role in fields like new strategic concepts, military planning, arms export control regimes and regional arms control. In 21 contributions by experts from Europe, the United States, Russia, India, Pakistan, Israel and Egypt, global and regional problems of missile proliferation, verification methods, the debate on the reorientation of missile defense and existing export regimes are analysed. The first section assesses the impact of dual-use technologies to build missiles indigenously. In the second section technical possibilities to verify ballistic missiles are proposed. The third section is delicated to the reorientation of missile defense after the Gulf War in the USA, Europe and Russia. The next chapter gives an assessment of the MTCR and the German and American export control efforts. The last chapter deals with the impact of the missile threat in the Middle East and South-East Asia. An appendix with proliferation-related documents, a bibliography, a glossary, and an index complete the book.
