Description
This monograph offers a radically updated reassessment of the narrative works of Johann Peter Hebel (1760–1826). It focuses on his extraordinary formal modernity, his transnational orientation and his role as a pioneer of the short story. Hebel was long marginalised as a "minor" or folk author; this study, however, positions him as a central figure in European literature at the threshold between the Enlightenment, Romanticism and early modernism.
