Description
Although music does not require text translation, its transfer from one cultural area to another often involves complex, long-term processes. Research on intercultural transfers offers a suitable instrument for comparatively examining the specific conditions, causes, actors, modifications and discourses of such processes – from a theoretical and historical perspective. In contrast to older theories, the focus is on the members of the receiving cultural community and their needs, as they play a decisive role in the success of an intercultural transfer. This is demonstrated with examples ranging from ancient music theory and Renaissance music to Italian baroque opera and Viennese classical music to jazz and pop.
