The volume addresses the manifold challenges which arise when a population is exposed to new living conditions without being prepared for them. This applies, for example, to Southeastern Europe, where achievements that had already been developed in the West for quite some time only became effective in the course of the 18th century. The transition towards Europe, however, did not only generate approval and progress but also caused irritation and reservations, the echoes of which can still be observed today. The publication is intended not only for specialists who are not familiar with the period before the 19th century in Southeastern Europe, but also for a non-academic readership interested in European topics.
