The rediscovery of mediaeval music from the six convents of the Luneburg Heath attracted worldwide attention. These north German convents – their buildings already recognised as “total works of art” – were generally known and admired for their art treasures such as the famous tapestries, but it has only now become clear that they contain musical treasures of equal stature. The “Heath convents” enjoyed a musical life as rich as that of Hildegard von Bingen and her nuns, and offer the modern listener an enriching experience of meditative communion with the inner self. This volume brings together the different depictions of music from the manuscripts alongside those from tapestries, wall-paintings and other artworks so that both researchers and lovers of art and music can study in detail these long-hidden iconographical treasures.
