Description
Based on the term “lieu de mémoire” coined by French cultural scholar Pierre Nora, this multidisciplinary volume examines a broad field of “places of memory” in organised skiing.
The focus is on traditional ski competitions and winter sports areas, decaying and forgotten ski jumps (“lost places”), objects owned by the stars of the international sports business that are displayed in museums, collected by enthusiasts and auctioned off. They also include places of socialising, media and biographies, and last but not least National Socialist sports policy, “invented traditions”, legends and myths, which repeatedly become objects of historical deconstruction.
