Description
Paul Johann Anselm Feuerbach (1775–1833) is regarded as a pioneer of modern criminal law. His formu-lation of the principle of legality (‘nullum crimen, nulla poena sine lege’), the theory of punishment based on general preventive deterrence that he developed, and his postulate regarding the separation of law and morality continue to influence legal scholarship to this day. To mark the 250th anniversary of his birth, the University of Jena organised an international conference in his honour in 2025. The papers ana-lyse Feuerbach’s thinking on criminal and civil law, his methods, his international reception, and the cur-rent significance of his ideas for legal scholarship, criminology, and legal practice.
