Description
The first volume begins by building on Ricœur’s early political and historically critical writings, published before the Second World War, as well as his engagements with Kierkegaard, Husserl, Jean Nabert, Gabriel Marcel, Jaspers’ philosophy of existence, Heidegger and Kant. It then turns to Ricœur’s phenomenologically inspired ‘poetics of the will’, which culminated in a ‘symbolism of evil’ in 1960. In doing so, it highlights the significance of an anthropology of human finitude and fallibility in understanding human existence and its ‘pathic’ bodily constitution, which finds expression in guilt and human suffering, in tragedy and grief.
