Description
Benedikt Stattler (1728-1797) developed a theological reform programme with the aim of embedding the scholasticism of Leibniz and Wolff in Catholic theology. By espousing the idea of Wolff as a philosophical reformer Stattler placed himself in the firing line of conservatives within the Church. Some of his later work was placed on the Index of Prohibited Books. Stattler’s principal works also comprise the elements of his system. This is divided into three spheres: the sphere of natural reason, the sphere of sublime reason and that of divine will. The foundations of this system in natural reason are set out in the work reprinted here, "Philosophy explained using the Methods of Science" (1769-1772).
