Description
In the Republic Plato seems to exclude poetry from the city he has founded. However, in the philosophical discussion of his Socrates, he does not forget poetry. The book of Fabio Massimo Giuliano begins from this point: he examines, in the dialogues of Plato, the fruition of poetry and the investigation into the nature of poetry. We obtain a general picture of the relationship with poetry based on a network of quotations offered by Plato also in order to characterize the single personages.

Final aim of this book is to interpret the meaning of the banishment which hangs over poetry in the ideal city. This banishment appear no longer as the product of an abstract and solitary speculation, but as an attempt, fully inserted in the cultural reality of the time, to define the limits and the new potentiality of poetry: the result of this potentiality is the composition of the dialogues, which in fact inherit the historical function of poetry.
