Description
The seven papers of this edited volume analyse the EU’s influence on policy change in the enlargement and neighbourhood countries in Southeast Europe, Turkey, Eastern Europe the Southern Caucasus and the southern Mediterranean. They develop short-, medium- and long-term policy recommendations on how the EU can improve its support of reforms concerning societal, economic and political issues. In this they tackle policies such as democracy promotion, environmental policy, visa facilitation, regulatory convergence with the internal market, political decentralisation for conflict resolution and the role of civil society in these reform processes.
Overall, the authors encourage the EU to design its policies more target group oriented and to extend the circle of actors addressed to non-state actors.

»this is a welcome empirical contribution to the literature which highlights that the EU's power to transform lies in the detail.«
