Few ongoing social conflicts feel as familiar as the political dispute over public finances. At the same time, from “cum-ex” to “money printing” to “special assets”, we have been experiencing a veritable series of financial, state budget and inequality crises, which, while receiving increasing public attention, can no longer be reflected in the routines of the Western welfare state era. Time for new approaches. Explorations of the history of ideas, theoretical contributions and contemporary case studies offered here, reaching from privatization to inheritance, survey the academic field, document the latest state of research and highlight inter- to transdisciplinary research perspectives.
