From the early newspapers of the 17th century, through the press of the French Revolution, to social networks and artificial intelligence: this interdisciplinary anthology sheds light on the evolving relationship between political journalism, media change and democratisation. International contributions from the fields of history, media studies, literary studies and communication studies analyse the actors, practices and self-conceptions of journalists in Europe and beyond. The case studies demonstrate how the media shape political debates, create a public sphere, exacerbate conflicts or promote democratic participation – and what challenges this poses for the present and the future.
