Description
For the last 20 years, the Euromedia Research Group has analysed media and media politics. Power, Performance & Politics is the group‘s latest endeavour to provide a comprehensive overview of changes in the European media landscape and their policy implications.
In eleven chapters, distinguished scholars from ten European countries analyse major developments: television on its way to digitalisation, the press in its decline and the emergence of online-media. The evolution of media is debated from a structural point of view. A major focus lies on the impact of media change on core media policy conceptions such as diversity of opinions and pluralism, transnationalisation and civil society. On the ground of revised theory models the following fundamental question are discussed: Do market conditions enable traditional and new media to contribute to the requirements of democracy? Do media provide information and a platform for voicing and exchanging of ideas? Do they control power-holders? Can media guarantee a diversity of opinions for the citizenry?
Chapters written by Els de Bens, Laura Berges, Kees Brants, Mario Hirsch, Olof Hultén, Hans J. Kleinsteuber, Rosario De Mateo, Werner A. Meier, Bernt S. Ostergaard, Denis McQuail, Vibeke G. Petersen, Josef Trappel and Jeremy Tunstall.
