This study examines the image of the priest as it is found in the Church Fathers of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Synodal period (1700–1917). Different models of the priesthood are identified and examined in terms of how they were shaped by the socio-political situation. In the course of the analysis, the author unfolds a spectrum of perceptions and nuances of meaning that continue to operate in various forms in the Orthodox Church to this day, making the image of the priest today so complex and difficult to grasp. The book will appeal to scholars of Russian theology as well as those interested in the history of the Orthodox Church.
