Description
What is the process by which trans*, intersex and non-binary (TIN*) individuals form friendships, and what role do these relationships play in the process of coming out and transitioning? This qualitative study shows that friendship is an important social resource for TIN* individuals. Friendships provide everyday support, stability, encouragement and a space for identity formation beyond cis-heteronormative frameworks. However, in the absence of support and understanding, this period may also be characterised by conflict, which can sometimes lead to the breakdown or transformation of relationships. The study introduces the concept of 'queering friendship' as a way of developing new perspectives on friendship.
