Description
The skin-covered bowed string instruments of the rabab family, which are played in various musical traditions and were also widely used in Europe in the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, were the subject of an interdisciplinary research project at the Bern Academy of the Arts from 2019 to 2023. This anthology contains some of the research outcomes as well as other thematically linked contributions. Together, they reflect the interdisciplinary and intercultural network that was necessary to approach the complex phenomenon of skin-covered bowed string instruments. The academic disciplines involved range from Arabic studies, Islamic studies and art history to musicology, ethnomusicology and physics.
