Description
Music has always been an important medium for artistic engagement with the theme of “peace”. Whether as sung calls for peace forming part of religious ceremonies, as a means of formulating the desire for peace, or as a part of celebrations following the signing of a peace treaty, many examples could be cited from all kinds of cultural contexts and periods. The essays in this volume, first presented at a conference in Münster in July 2018, examine both inherent compositional references to peace and contextual attributions that develop out of functionalisation for peace celebrations. The long historical scope and the inclusion of essays on non-European and non-Christian music create a wide panorama of varied studies.
