Description
In two of the world's oldest religious museums, similar religious objects were exhibited with very different curatorial intentions at the end of the 1920s and in the course of the 1930s. This book presents the two museums in the Soviet Union and Germany in a sensory way—also with the help of numerous previously unpublished illustrations— to portray their protagonists and illuminate the social framework conditions of their founding as well as their predecessor museums. This reconstructive analysis of the exhibitions in both museums is based on an evaluation of a wealth of archival sources and brings to life their curatorial practices of depicting religion and religious objects in either an enchanting or a disenchanting way.
