Description
In this book, religious change is considered from a global, transcultural perspective. Since religious beliefs, practices, and social forms vary substantially across the globe, the focus is on how religion is constituted in different socio-cultural contexts and can be sociologically gaged. The publication delineates how the relevance of religion has been stabilized worldwide, whether as a category of belonging, a cultural resource of meaning, or a source of political legitimacy, and, not least, as a generator of globalization. Consequently, religion is regularly involved in conflictual dynamics. A deeper understanding of social causes and modes of religious mobilization, also as an effect and facet of global entanglements, is a basic concern of the volume.
