Description
The eleven essays which comprise this book aim to guide readers from academic and political circles as to the current state of the discussion on the future development of the EU and to explain and discuss the significance of federalism as a model for the EU from the perspective of a variety of fields, such as history, politics, law and economics. In doing so, they refute the idea of federalism being synonymous with a process of centralisation which will eventually lead to the creation of a European super state. They also reject the idea that the EU should be modelled on established federal states. Instead, these essays call for a sophisticated understanding of federal principles and structures, above all the division and control of power, as a prerequisite for an appropriate understanding of federalism as a political model and for the development of EU integration.
