Description
The present volume contains Virchow's works on prehistory and history from the years 1888 to 1890. They testify to how far the still young subject of prehistory had already progressed after about 20 years of existence - especially due to Virchow's methodological foundation. Even the state authorities accepted prehistory as a subject to be promoted. By dealing with interdisciplinary questions and using anthropological and ethnological methods, prehistory, which had been scientifically oriented by Virchow, now contributed more and more to the study of the path of mankind. In addition to largely scientifically formulated research results - as they are still common today - in this volume, lectures and investigations by Virchow catch the eye, which as travelogues or summarizing historical accounts have remained nice to read even today, e.g., the report No. 19 of November 17, 1888, where Virchow lets the reader participate in his travel experiences (not only results) on the way of the Lombards as seen by him, or when he reports in detail on October 19, 1889, about Rhaeto-Romanic house building.
