Like the previously published notebooks and diaries, the contents of this volume clearly indicate the areas of knowledge which Virchow was primarily working on at the time, here especially prehistory, anthropology and to some extent ethnology. In addition to these there are entries on medical matters and references by Virchow to his wide-ranging political and administrative activities and to the many congresses in which he played a leading role.
