Schengen

"Schengen" is a European success story and has decisively changed not only the manifestation of borders between member states, but also their institutionalised protection. This book therefore takes a look at the function of state borders, their meaning and how they can be experienced from a social as well as a police perspective, before tracing the long road to the "Schengen area" in the context of European integration. The compensatory measures for the associated discontinuation of regular stationary controls are presented, and institutional border space constructions and the education of the population are examined on the basis of the public relations work of security authorities.
