Description
In the center of the first detailed, text-immanent depiction of Schleiermacher’s psychology is the mental principle – more precisely, the distinctive manifestation of the human soul, accompanied by the physical organization; hence, no less than the living human being itself. Since their first publication in 1862, the available sources, Schleiermacher’s autographs and students’ postscripts, gained rather scant attention. Based on these texts, this book illustrates that the doctrine of the soul represents an important discipline for Schleiermacher’s entire thinking. This doctrine may be read as a systematic outline of conditions and modes of action in the context of individual formative processes, which occur within the vivid oscillation between the individual and the world around.
The author is also editor of the volume “Lectures on Psychology,” which has recently been published as a part of the Critical Complete Edition that includes and critically commentates all four lectures on psychology.
