The technical realisation of flying created a new understanding of time and space, which have, in return, also shaped ideas of safety and security. Perception and handling of safety and security issues were crucial for civil aviation from the beginning, but have altered continuously and have to date become a complex challenge.
This study offers an initial contribution to the cultural history of aviation security connecting approaches of the Science of Literature as well as the History and Philosophy of Technology, thereby scrutinizing the relation between security, technology, space, and literary fiction. Thus, functions of literary narratives are explained and concepts of security, technology and space are reflected.
