Taking a micro-political approach and focusing on the shop floor, this volume critically examines social partnership at Bayer Leverkusen. The transformation of workplace co-determination is analysed from three perspectives: work in the large-scale chemical industry, developments in communication structures since 1945, and the role of the works council in negotiating performance-related pay in the workshops. It is particularly here that the works council’s power-conscious use of co-determination rights becomes apparent.
