Description
The principle of sovereignty in Bulgaria’s constitutional system, which has developed historically, was modified by the newly created constitutional framework for the EU accession. How does the Bulgarian legislator amending the constitution deal with the field of tension caused between sovereignty and EU membership? What consequences arise in practice and/or are to be expected? How does the ongoing process of integration brought about by the Lisbon Treaty affect the actual evolvement of the principle of sovereignty?
This thesis looks into these questions and explores how much room for manoeuvre exists at state level, the effects on citizen participation as well as democratic self-determination and how it is perceived in Bulgaria. Furthermore, this thesis shows the real significance of the principle of sovereignty for Bulgaria and thus for other EU states, taking as a basis the historical, constitutional and political context.
