The handbook reflects on and discusses social work and social pedagogy in terms of their subject matter, their development, and their future prospects. It addresses issues of professionalism and professionalization as well as ethical and epistemological reference points.

It is aimed at students, teachers, and researchers in social work, pedagogy, and educational sciences. Its guiding principle is expressed in a questioning and thoughtful tone: the authors invite readers to think along, disagree, and build on their ideas by not reproducing schools in their contributions, but rather bringing them into relation with and friction with each other. A special feature of the handbook is its transnational approach.
