Freedom is a subject of sociological inquiry: it is an empirical social phenomenon, a way of life, not merely a political value, but also a social value that actors invoke to legitimize their actions. Freedom is a myth around which narratives of freedom form and an idea that has given rise to diverse cultures of freedom. Freedom shapes institutional structures and conflict dynamics at the regional, national, or global level. This first German-language introduction to the sociology of freedom explores these multifaceted aspects of freedom. It provides a systematic overview of sociological approaches to freedom and the social dimension of freedom and introduces forward-looking fields of sociological research on freedom.#
