Playing is a primal phenomenon of nature, life and people. This ‘matter of course’ has only been rudimentarily researched to date. In this handbook, researchers on this subject from across the social sciences and humanities come together for the first time to provide an insight into the diverse aspects of playful phenomena from their respective perspectives: from imaginative playing with toys and board games to digital games and eSports. Playing is far more than just entertainment and a pastime. Language development, personality development, character development, social and ethical skills and, last but not least, the capacity for democracy are all developed through playing and make the topics covered in this book interdisciplinary.
