The status of our world as a world of states is rarely questioned. However, does statehood really represent normality in all regions of the world? ‘Staaten in der evolutionären Sackgasse?’ (Are States at an Evolutionary Dead End?) deals with the evolutionary roots and patterns of weak states. Using extensive case studies on Afghanistan and Yemen, this book develops an innovative evolutionary institutional theory which allows for a new conceptualisation of those states and their development. The results are more precise descriptions, more accurate root cause analyses and the potential for policies which generate less collateral damage in dealing with those countries.
