Description
In the past two thousand years, the Italian peninsula has known nearly all forms of the state (empire, republic, city state, ‘signoria’, nation state, etc.). In the 20th century alone, the observer will find enough material to stimulate further thinking in terms of both political reality and political theory.
There is no certainty about the way the Italian state will develop in the coming decades. At the end of 2016, the majority of the population opposed an attempt by the government to obtain, by way of a referendum, a mandate to change the constitution so as to reinforce its executive powers. But what failed in 2016 might be successful at a later time, should a crisis situation arise.
The contributions in this volume address some key moments in the discussions about the state in Italy, beginning with the late Middle Ages, and provide ideas and information that will enrich contemporary discussions.

Martin Beckstein, Stefano Biancu, Alberto Bondolfi, Norbert Campagna, Markus Krienke, Manuel Knoll, Pierpaolo Portinaro, Volker Reinhardt, Francesca Russo, Stefano Saracino and Benjamin Schmid
