This empirical recidivism study examines whether intramural and extramural prisoners differ in terms of their subsequent legal probation and to what extent the chosen form of imprisonment is an influencing factor. The theoretical part of the study illustrates the challenges of the penal system, the extramural electronically monitored house arrest, and the various facets of recidivism. The empirical part of the study contains key findings from the 900 Austrian prisoners studied, which provide a comprehensive and in-depth insight into the particularities and challenges of the intra- and extra-prison population, including their subsequent legal probation.
