This book analyses how historical narratives, church-shaped constructions of identity, and religious actors contribute to both the escalation and interpretation of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Special attention is given to the Russian Orthodox Church, the plural ecclesiastical landscape of Ukraine, and the ambivalent stance of the Vatican under Pope Francis. Drawing on church history, the study offers a well-grounded perspective on collective identity, memory politics, and the ideological instrumentalisation of religion in armed conflicts. The author is a church historian specializing in Eastern Christianity and the role of churches under authoritarian regimes and in periods of political transformation.
