Studien zu Ferdinand Pfohl und Felix Woyrsch

Ferdinand Pfohl (1862–1949) and Felix Woyrsch (1860–1944) were among the influential figures in Hamburg’s musical life. Pfohl served as music critic for the “Hamburger Nachrichten” for 40 years. A composer at heart, he became a nationally renowned authority as a music writer (authoring biographies of Wagner and Nikisch). As a composer, organist, choirmaster and municipal music director, Felix Woyrsch was the central figure in the musical life of the town of Altona, which remained independent until 1938.
In 2024, the Pfohl-Woyrsch Society dedicated a two-day symposium to them. The resulting anthology brings together, for the first time, overviews and detailed studies of their work. It is aimed at specialists and those interested in Hamburg’s musical history.
